Smoothbeam Laser for Acne and Acne Scarring

One of the causes of acne is enlargement of the sebaceous follicles which contain oil-producing sebaceous glands. Often acne goes untreated resulting in pain, debilitating scar formation and skin damage. Many individuals who do seek treatment have had traditional oral and topical acne treatments which do not treat the direct source of acne that is the overactive sebaceous gland. In the past, the mainstay of treatment has been Accutane which has many potential, undesired side effects. Now the Smoothbeam laser offers a long-term solution by directly altering the structure and function of the sebaceous glands, drastically reducing acne lesions without side effects.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Over 80% of your skin is made up of water. The Smoothbeam emits a wavelength of light that is strongly absorbed by water in your skin. As the laser penetrates into the skin, heat is generated in and around the sebaceous glands in the upper layers of your skin. The heating of the sebaceous glands creates a mild thermal injury that changes the activity and function of the glands. Shortly after the first treatment, you will start to see a reduction in the number of acne lesions on your skin. Smoothbeam can be used on any skin color as it targets water and not melanin.

ACNE SCARS

Smoothbeam works by stimulating cells that generate new collagen. It helps to reduce the depressions seen in atrophic scars by creating new collagen in the upper dermis. In most cases, four to five treatments are needed, three to four weeks apart.

PERIORAL WRINKLES

Smoothbeam uses a wavelength that is absorbed in the upper dermis creating a thermal injury close to the surface of the skin where photo damage is most prevalent. It is proving to be effective for the reduction of mild to moderate wrinkles around the eyes. Most patients show improvement after three to four treatments.

PROCEDURE

• We advise clients to stop using Retin-A (Tretinoin), exfoliants and Hydroquinone (including Clear and Blender from Obagi line), three days before and three days after each Smoothbeam treatment.
• If there is a history of cold sores, patients need to take antiviral agents before and after each laser treatment.
• There is no preparation required in advance for the Smoothbeam treatment. You should, however, avoid sun exposure before and after the laser procedure.
• Your skin will be thoroughly removed of any makeup, creams or oils on its surface.
• A topical anesthetic will be applied for approximately one hour.
• Depending on the size of the treated area, a treatment could last from fifteen to thirty minutes.
• After the laser procedure, your skin may be slightly red and tender which usually subsides in only a few hours. You should avoid rigorous scrubbing of the treated area. Cleanse and treat gently. Be sure to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen during the course of your multiple treatments.
