You may not be a good candidate for SmartSkin® CO2 if you have a dark skin tone (Fitzpatrick levels IV-VI). SmartSkin® CO2 works by using a fractional CO2 laser to create microscopic, controlled injuries in the skin. This activates the body’s natural healing response, stimulating the fibroblasts to produce new elastin and collagen.
The ultra-fine light beams from the handpiece also vaporize damaged skin cells in a fractional (grid) pattern. This spares the surrounding tissue and promotes quicker recovery. Eventually, the healing system of your body naturally removes these cells and makes way for healthy cells to come to the surface. Depending on the setting, the light beams can enter deeper dermal layers compared to other lasers.
The SmartSkin® CO2 laser resurfacing treatment lasts roughly 30 to 90 minutes in the office, depending on the area size and treatment intensity. Dr. Hotchandani will apply a topical anesthetic before the procedure to reduce discomfort. Pronox (laughing gas) provides greater tolerance to the procedure.
