Don’t Sweat It! Treat Axillary Hyperhidrosis with miraDry®

underarm sweat

It is normal to sweat when it is hot outside, but too much sweat can be noticeable and embarrassing. Some men and women struggle with excessive sweating and accompanying body odor that persists no matter what kind of at-home remedies are used. Axillary hyperhidrosis, commonly known as excessive underarm sweating, is a condition that often damages a person’s self-esteem. In addition to being exposed to sweltering temperatures, other of the causes of overactive underarm sweat glands include, but are not limited to:

  • Caffeine consumption
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Thyroid conditions

With miraDry® treatment, patients can safely and effectively stunt sweat production in their underarms. While sweat does perform the important task of cooling the body and reducing the risk of overheating, the underarms only account for 2 percent of the sweat glands contained in the body. Eliminating sweat in this area does not post any major threat related to overheating.

Why miraDry®?

Many patients can manage their axillary hyperhidrosis with prescription-strength antiperspirants, but these medicated products only provide temporary relief. Those who want to finally get rid of the emotional burden of excessive underarm sweating may be candidates for miraDry®. This non-invasive and FDA-cleared treatment involves delivering controlled energy to the sweat glands to block their activity without harming the underarm tissue.

Benefits of miraDry®

  • Non-surgical treatment
  • Quick results
  • Long-lasting effects
  • Improved self-esteem
  • A wider selection of clothing options

What to Expect from miraDry® Treatment

Before miraDry® treatment begins, the target area is prepared with local anesthesia to ensure optimal comfort throughout the procedure. A temporary tattoo is then placed to mark the specific region to be addressed. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, the miraDry® handpiece is placed on the surface of the skin under the arms, and controlled thermal energy is delivered. Most patients get their desired result with one session, while some patients may require two sessions. Each procedure takes approximately one hour to complete.

Recovery

Some patients who undergo miraDry® experience localized swelling, bruising, numbness, or soreness. However, these side effects are minor and temporary. Most normal activities, including work, can be continued after treatment, but exercise should be avoided for several days or until cleared by your doctor.

Results

This non-invasive procedure produces long-lasting relief from overactive underarm sweat, restoring patients’ self-confidence and broadening their wardrobe selection. A significant improvement in sweat production is usually noticeable immediately after the appointment, but the outcome varies from patient-to-patient. After the procedure, patients often feel more comfortable wearing sleeveless clothing of various fabrics because they are no longer worried about showing sweat marks.
